When I say fire your boss, people assume I am talking about quitting a job and becoming some Instagram entrepreneur with a laptop at the beach. That is not what I mean. Hell, sometimes the job is the least of your problems.

Sometimes the boss is a mortgage. Sometimes it is a truck you do not even like anymore but still polish because it belonged to the dream five versions of you ago. Sometimes it is a title, a habit, a subscription, a storage unit, a family expectation, or a calendar full of people you were too polite to disappoint.

If something owns your time, money, or mental energy, and it does not serve the life you are trying to build, it is your boss. You work for it. You sacrifice for it. You obey it. And you may not have even noticed when you handed over the keys.

The five bosses worth looking at are simple. The money boss, the calendar boss, the identity boss, the approval boss, and the fear boss. The money boss keeps you buying things to prove something. The calendar boss makes everybody else urgent. The identity boss keeps you loyal to a version of yourself you have outgrown. The approval boss makes you call their dream your dream. The fear boss tells you sitting still is responsible.

This is not permission to blow up your life because you read one blog post. Real responsibilities are real. Kids are real. Bills are real. Commitments are real. But an unexamined master is still a master. The point is to get honest enough to see what owns you, then take back one piece at a time.

Make a list called 'Who Owns Me?' Do not make it pretty. Circle the one thing you can reduce by ten percent this week. A bill. A habit. A commitment. A debt. A story you keep telling yourself. Start there.

The first boss you have to fire is the one you keep calling 'just how life is.'
